The Communication Studies Study Program team of University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) conducted “Training and Writing Assistance as Part of Media Literacy for Prisoners'' at the Women's Prison II A Malang (6/12/21). This activity is carried out so that inmates who leave the Correctional Institution (Lapas) have traces of stories in the form of books. Their enthusiasm was seen when they participated in the training and writing assistance. They want to inflame the spirit of literacy even though they are inmates in prison. This program is a community service program funded by the FISIP-UMM block grant mechanism.
These inmates are not random. They were strictly selected for the event. "We are selective. Actually we want to free all to follow. Lots of enthusiasm. But because of the effectiveness of the implementation, we selected 40 inmates. This training is important so that there is no impression that they are only imprisoned here, but they are really fostered," said Hamlana Rizka AE, Head of the Subsection of Community Guidance and Care (Head of Sub-Section Bimkemaswat) Class II A Women's Prison, Malang, which was established in 1969.
When giving his speech, M. Himawan Sutanto, one of the service team, said that it is our responsibility as a campus to provide benefits to the community. “I hope that the participants will be able to write articles, then we will collect them into one book. We will find sponsors. At least when they go out they have a memento of having a book. ". We will find sponsors for their books. At least these convicts when they get out of prison have a keepsake of the books that have been written. "said the lecturer who is also the Vice Dean III of FISIP UMM.
The event, which was attended by 36 inmates, was carried out in two ways. The first is training and explanation related to technical writing problems. Then they were accompanied to write. Then participants were given the opportunity to write freely about their experiences and observations so far. Then the prison is monitored again, then after the writings are collected they can be published into books.
This writing training impressed Anisa (27) a prisoner from Malang. “For me, this can express boredom and kill time. Moreover, the book that we will write based on our daily experiences. It means that we have writing materials,” he said.
When asked to explain why the training program was conducted in writing. Widiya Yutanti, speaker and facilitator said, “Writing can hone creativity. I think that all prison residents have the potential to write. They just don't know what to write. How to write. Then how to publish it. So, we are trying to facilitate it,” he said. Writing training and mentoring was carried out by Widiya Yutanti, Nurudin, M. Himawan Sutanto, and Rahadi as a form of community service. The Women's Prison II A Malang was chosen because it has been a national reference place for residents. (nrd/wnd/nsv)
